Did Eve start to notice
A void
Something missing
Among the many trees and fruit
In Eden?
Did she partake on a Tuesday
As she always had
But found the fruit left her belly
Hungry
And wanting
Undernourished
And unfulfilled?
Was it months
Or years that went by
As she questioned the change happening
Between her
And the garden
Between her hunger
And the prescribed fruit
Meant to feed her?
Did her new thoughts
And observations
Grow louder at night
As she examined
Every corner of her mind
Reaching for answers
While glancing occasionally
At her sleeping partner beside her?
Did the flowers,
Trees and grasses
That grew without thorns
Or effort
Begin to bear needles
And thistles
Piercing her skin
Day to day
The tree branches
Growing like a cage around her?
Did she sample from the Tree of Knowledge
And then from the prescribed trees
One fruit in each hand
Experimenting
over
and over
again
In secret?
Did she feel alarmed
When what felt like
A serpent within her
Encouraged her to reach
Beyond the box she had been given
To grow past Eden
And its good
But wanting garden?
Did she ever take Adam
By the hand
And tearfully share
The struggle
In her heart and mind
While wondering
And worrying all along
That she could end up
Alone
And
Homeless
Outside the only place
She ever knew?
Did she feel alone
When she saw
Her partner
Adam
Fulfilled
And happily fed
While she stood
Without purpose
Her stomach still aching
With hunger?
Did she feel guilt
Or shame
When she offered Adam
The “forbidden fruit”
Bringing their world to a potential
End
By her own hand?
And did she ever look back
After they were both cast out
Now in a foreign world
And worry
That maybe it was
A devil inside her
And not
Her inner divine
That made her do it?
Would Eve call it
A “Faith Crisis”
What brought her out of the garden
That day?
Would the humans that followed claim
“She learned lazily”
And made the biggest mistake
of all?
Maybe she would
And
Maybe they would
But
Maybe it was just
Messy
Painful
Progress.
